Matthew 5:38-41 - with Frank

38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’
39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.
40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well.
41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.
42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

Observations

What are we to do if someone slaps us on the right cheek? (Verse 39)

Are we to give to the one who asks? (verse 42)

Who's talking? (Matthew 5:1-2)

Interpretation Questions

Why shouldn't we resist an evil person?
(Matthew 5:44-45, Romans 12:19, Deuteronomy 32:35)

Why would you want to give more than you would be sued for?
(Deuteronomy 32:35, Mark 11:24-26, Luke 23:33-35)

Why should we give to the one who asks, and not turn away from the one who wants to borrow?
(Mark 11:24-26, Matthew 5:6-8)

Thoughts

Do not take revenge,
my dear friends,
but leave room for God’s wrath,
 for it is written:
“It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. - Romans 12:19

Deuteronomy 32:35

It is mine to avenge; I will repay.
    In due time their foot will slip;
their day of disaster is near
and their doom rushes upon them.

Mark 11:24-26

Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer,
believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone,
forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”

Luke 23:33-35

When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there,
along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left.
Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”
And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.
The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him.
They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah,
 the Chosen One.”

.... "And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well." - Matthew 5:40
